Explosive Power Hitting Tips to Raise Your Game
Here's the power hitting secret you've all been waiting for...
You ready? It's quite simple really,
Power hitting technique is from the waist down, the arms are only along for the ride...they too have a proper technique, and that information can be found in Vital Hitting Tips on the navigation bar. But for now, we're talking pure sugarcane power from the CORE down.
The CORE down is responsible for 85-90% of swing power, the rest is DYNAMITE D&T hand path to the ball.
From a personal training point of view the CORE is defined as:
"The Core is where the body's center of gravity is located and where all movements begins. An efficient core is necessary for maintaining proper muscle balance throughout the entire kinetic chain*."
*The kinetic chain meaning the nervous, skeletal, and muscular systems.
There are 29 muscles that make up the CORE in the human body's lumbo-pelvic-hip complex, and these muscles are so crucial to hitting a baseball with authority. You have to properly train the CORE stabilization and movement systems to generate maximum swing leverage and power.
We'll go over this in our coming soon training section, but for a How-To article on developing essential waist down mechanics, then read
read this piece on Rotational Hitting.
Take it from Ted Williams, arguably the best hitter ever, when he talks about the role the hips play in hitting with power from his world renown book, The Science of Hitting...
"...hip cocking is as important as wrist action any day. The way you bring your hips into the swing is directly proportionate to the power you generate."
People always said Ted Williams was a wrist hitter, but he disagreed and said those reports were grossly exaggerated. Swing power derives from the hips, the coiling, rotation, and transferring energy to the arms, which carry out the linear centrifugal force needed to put backspin on the baseball.
Without the right CORE down mechanics you might as well roll up a wet newspaper and hit with it.
Let's dance a little with the late Ted Williams,

Let's also dispel swing myths associated with hitting I hear everyday from good intentioned parents and coaches, such as:
- Is the swing rotational or linear?
- Why less is always more with a power hitting swing,
- Is the "back elbow up" concept healthy to teach kids?
- What are the best training methods available for increasing bat speed?
- And, is the top or bottom hand responsible for upper body power?

Aristotle-esk hitting philosophy piece.
