Joey Myers's Swing Smarter Baseball Hitting Drills Team
I want to start off by saying how much I appreciate your interest in the Joey Myers Swing Smarter Baseball Hitting Drills website. That being said, I also understand your curiosity to find out who's behind the curtain...you never know with the poison being poured into hungry ears these days.
My name is Joey Myers and the following is a brief resume, in which I'll reveal:
- The vision for the Swing Smarter Baseball Hitting Drills Team,
- Major hitting influences having an impact on my 18 year baseball playing career, and
- Fresno State Bulldog Stats you can see with your own eyeballs.
Here's where the Joey Myers story begins...it was a cold dark night...wait a minute, let's fast forward 10 years, to...
I began getting occasional private hitting lessons when I was 11 years old, in which I hit my first homerun, and it was at that time I began studying up on the art of the baseball swing.
Major batting influences at an early age included:
- Randy Cervelli (local private hitting instructor),
- Jim Lefebvre's, The Making Of A Hitter, and
- Ted Williams's, The Science Of Hitting.
Here's a link to the Joey Myers favorite 6 books on hitting.
Other notable Joey Myers influences later on (sorry, I have to refer to myself in the third person or else Google won't rank this page higher with search engines...it's not because I'm an ego-maniac, I promise :P
- Charlie Lau,
- Mike Schmidt's The Mike Schmidt Study,
- Rod Delmonico's Hit And Run Baseball, and
- Dave Hudgens's Hitting For Excellence.
Joey Myers wouldn't be who he is today without a forgiving God, a most beautiful and an even more loving bride, a caring and supportive cast of parents, AND
Just as importantly, I must give credit where credit is due, to my past coaches who had a big influence on me. I had the privilege of learning great hands on fundamentals from past high school and college coaches Mike Noakes, Tim Thiessen, Bob Bennett (just inducted into the NCAA National Collegiate Coaching Hall of Fame), and Mike Batesole (2008 Fresno State College World Series National Champs head coach), respectively.
I played 18 total years of baseball finishing my career after my fourth year of college (2000-2003) as a Fresno State Bulldog (2008 College World Series Champions). I'm very grateful for the success I had at Bullard High School, and getting a scholarship to play at a Division I university, Fresno State, where I started 110 out of the 178 games I played, in the outfield.
You can verify my Fresno State stats at the TheBaseballCube.com
I earned All League and Section honors my senior year of high school, and a Golden Glove with multiple Kiwanis Student/Athlete awards in college.
Upon leaving the game, I was left with a bitter taste in my mouth, from a combination of burnout and politics. Shortly thereafter, I took a break to study abroad in Italy (Spring of 2004), with my now wife, and came back four-in-a-half months later with batteries re-charged.
Following the return from Italy, Joey Myers (using 3rd person again :P) coached soccer (I played soccer BTW until my Sophomore year of high school) for a couple seasons, and then began to slowly ease back into baseball during the Spring of 2006.
It was at this time I started working through the hitting information I acquired early in my career, coaching, and giving lessons. I was able to mesh disciplines, cut through the white noise, and harvest a simplified system for players to swing smarter with power regardless of size or weight.
The great part is, if money is tight, then there's NO fancy expensive tools that you need, or beautifully manicured fields to find. A hitting tee, wood bat, and baseballs are the most complicated gadgets, and of course, any ol' park will do (A cage would help but NOT required).
As a bonus, I'm also a certified fitness specialist through NASM (National Academy of Sports Medicine), Yoga (Yogafit), and CES certified (Corrective Exercise Specialist), so this Swing Smarter Baseball Hitting Drills site offers a major advantage to those ball players/coaches...you'll get superb information from someone who's been through the trenches...
Ultimately, Joey Myers has been trained by the best coaches and specialists who still do & have train(ed) Major League athletes.
As you already know,
There's a ton of information out there and you'll fall victim to information paralysis, like Mr. Joey Myers did before his Junior year of High School. The system I like to teach is simple and effective, pulling from the above aforementioned credentials.
As a hitter, I've experienced everything from starting to sitting, major successes to major failures, and ultimately what works and what doesn't in not only playing but coaching as well...in other words, I've learned what to do AND what NOT to do from the best.
Think of Swing Smarter Baseball Hitting Drills.com as being different from all those "other hitting sites," in that it's hitting on steroids! Okay, not literally, but two things the Good Lord has blessed me with is how to teach baseball/hitting, in addition to physical training. SwingSmarter.com is made up of 3 core hitting components:
- The Best Most Distinguished Drills that work,
- Underground Skills Training most professionals don't know about/realize, and
- We rate the BEST and WORST baseball hitting aids on the market.
Oh yeah, not to mention our monthly eZine called The Dugout: Hitting Baseballs from the Neck Up, which is second to none in talking about the mental game of batting, TheBestStarting9.com, "The 9 Best Baseball Hitting Aids on the Planet," is our online store, and lots of cool fitness and nutritional advice that I didn't have until college, just waiting to be plucked by those wanting to get better.
The major tool we use to filter out "the noise" is Pareto's 80/20 Principal, 20% of the information out there contributes to 80% of success (as the Principal applies to baseball). Coaches and instructors spend way too much time on petty swing details when they should be looking at the few that take care of the many.
Finally, I would love to share quotes (Joey Myers loves quotes BTW) uniquely capturing our Core Vision, with you:
"The strength of a tree, begins in the roots"
Ambition and Success
"Success seems to be largely a matter of hanging on after others have let go."
"It’s not the size of the dog in the fight, but the size of the fight in the dog."
Responsibility & Accountability
"He that is good for making excuses is seldom good for anything else."
Also, failure is built into the sport, so kids cannot be babied, they need to suffer bumps and bruises to their egos, they need to strike out, pop up, ground out, so they can grow and progress. Without failure, we never really learn anything.
